Physician Quality Reporting: Getting Started and Driving Improvement

November 14, 2011

Only 20 percent of physicians are currently participating in the Medicare Physician Quality Reporting System. Those who successfully report quality measures are eligible to receive a 0.5 percent increase in their Medicare payments from 2012 through 2014. Physicians who do not report by 2015 will be hit with a 1.5 percent payment penalty. In addition, quality reporting is required for physicians to receive incentive payments under the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record program, and to participate in Accountable care organizations, bundled payment and other reform initiatives.

Download the recorded webinar to learn how two organizations – one an academic medical center and the other a system of rural hospitals – started physician quality measurement in their hospitals and clinics, and how they are using data to drive performance improvement. The session features Dr. William Fulkerson, a pulmonologist/intensivist and executive vice president of Duke University Health System, and Dr. Lanny Copeland, a family physician and chief medical officer of LifePoint Hospitals.

In addition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will release its CY 2012 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule by November 1. Staff will summarize key changes affecting physicians, especially those related to physician quality reporting. Look for an American Hospital Association Special Bulletin that summarizes key provisions of the proposed rule.
