AHA report examines post-acute care trends, innovations
A new American Hospital Association (AHA) TrendWatch report offers guidance to post-acute providers (PAC) and their partners as they evaluate new models of care delivery and payment. „These providers face an increasingly complex regulatory and market environment as health care transforms from a system that rewards volume to one that encourages and rewards value, ” the report notes. „This report highlights case examples from PAC innovators and their partners as they adapt to the early stages of delivery system reform; it also examines the current and potential future landscape for long-term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies. The Addendum, available online at www.aha.org/research, provides background on each of these care settings, including their clinical scopes of services, current payment methodologies and regulatory changes.” AHA is hosting an upcoming briefing on Capitol Hill to inform members of Congress and their legislative staff about post-acute care innovations. The panel will include speakers from Kindred Healthcare, HealthSouth, Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, FL and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY.
AHA, CDC project to help hospitals implement infection prevention measures
The American Hospital Association’s Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) affiliate and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced a three-year initiative to improve the implementation of infection prevention and control efforts in U.S. hospitals. The project will work with state hospital associations, state health departments, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Quality Improvement Networks, AHA’s American Society for Healthcare Engineering affiliate and other partners to reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), Clostridium difficile infections and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in targeted acute care hospitals. „We welcome the opportunity to work with CDC on the important issue of infection prevention,” said Maulik Joshi, president of HRET and associate executive vice president of AHA. „This project will build on our national work that has successfully reduced CAUTI and CLABSI rates and improved patient care.”
ASA’s Perioperative Surgical Home Learning Collaborative 2.0 – Applications due Jan. 15
The Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) is a patient-centric, team-based model of care created by leaders within the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to help meet the demands of a rapidly approaching health care paradigm that will emphasize value, patient satisfaction and reduced costs.

Although only in its early stages, the PSH model has been transformative for many of the early adopters who have incorporated it at their institutions including the members of the first PSH Learning Collaborative.

ASA is currently seeking participants for its PSH Learning Collaborative 2.0, which begins on April 1, 2016. Building upon the successes of the first collaborative, the second Learning Collaborative will focus on PSH strategies that are compatible with alternative payment models such as the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI), Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR), the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).

The collaborative welcomes participants who are at the earliest stages of PSH participation and those seeking more advanced guidance.

If you are interested in joining the PSH Learning Collaborative 2.0, please contact PSH Executive Roseanne Fischoff for more information at [email protected] or at (847) 268-9169. Learn more about the PSH at asahq.org/psh.
New line of apps helping patients better manage their conditions
New health care apps are helping patients better manage their medical conditions in between doctor’s visits, according to an article from the Wall Street Journal. Clinical trials are being conducted on apps related to HIV medication adherence, cancer pain management, asthma, and heart problems, among others. The article says these apps are now being prescribed by physicians. They will send patients reminders and messages, provide physicians with real-time data, as well as alert physicians to any potential problems. The hope is these apps will help prevent complications, readmissions or emergency room visits, the article says.
More physicians using online crowdsourcing to solve medical problems
With the extinction of the doctor’s lounge, more physicians are turning to crowdsourcing sites as resources to improve care, according to a recent article from Trustee magazine. The article highlights a crowdsourcing site called SERMO, which boasts approximately 380,000 members who are all verified physicians. Physicians can post questions anonymously and receive answers within minutes or hours. Other physician crowdsourcing sites exist, the article notes, such as CrowdMed, where both patients and physicians can post questions anonymously and receive answers from medical experts, and Figure 1, an app similar to Instagram where doctors can share medical images.
Register now for our webinar on AMA-AHA integrated leadership principles
Sparked by the evolution of our nation’s health care system and the challenge of profound structural reforms to the delivery of and payment for care, the American Medical Association (AMA) and American Hospital Association (AHA) released a set of guiding principles for bringing clinical skills and business insights together at the leadership level to foster more collaborative and cohesive decision-making at hospitals and health systems.

Join the AHA’s Physician Leadership Forum and the AMA on Tuesday, Jan. 12 beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET to learn about Integrated Leadership for Hospitals and Health Systems: Principles for Success. The principles provide a guiding framework for physicians and hospitals that choose to create an integrated leadership structure but are unsure how to best achieve the engagement and alignment necessary to collaboratively prioritize patient care and resource management. These principles are the result of more than two years of work between the AHA and AMA.
