CMS releases final physician fee schedule rule for 2012

Yesterday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its final rule with payment updates and changes to the physician fee schedule beginning January 1. Without a change in law, Medicare payments to physician providers will decline by an estimated 27.4 percent beginning January 1, 2012. While this is slightly lower than the 29.5 percent reduction estimated earlier this year cuts of this magnitude are unsustainable.
