Staffing tomorrow’s hospital? The conversation starts in November
In November, hospital and health care leaders from across the country will meet to map out the hospital staff of the future.

According to John Nelson, MD, MHM, some doctors in nearly every specialty are adopting a hospital-focused (hospitalist) model of practice. After the "early adopter” specialties of adult medicine and pediatrics, the model has more recently been embraced most enthusiastically by neurologists, obstetricians, general surgeons, and psychiatrists.

“The Hospital-Focused Practice Meeting will provide an opportunity to hear from experts in these fields and for all specialties to essentially 'compare notes’ and share ideas, and to think broadly about issues raised by this trend,” says Nelson, who has received enthusiastic responses from leaders in health care, hospitals, hospital medicine and finance.

In addition to presentations from specialists who already have begun implementing hospital-focused models, the meeting’s agenda includes time for networking, a critical component for an emerging concept.

The Hospital-Focused Practice Meeting is sponsored by the Society of Hospital Medicine, the American Hospital Association, the Neurohospitalist Society and ObGynHospitalist.com.

“Fifteen years ago, hospital medicine was an emerging idea catalyzed by individuals sharing their experiences,” says Nelson. “Ten years from now, we’ll be saying the same thing about hospital-focused practice and point back to this meeting in November.”
