AHA comments on proposed ACO statement of antitrust enforcement policy
The AHA recently urged the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to replace their proposed regulatory scheme for accountable care organizations under the Medicare Shared Savings Program with guidance that builds on the positive aspects of their proposed antitrust enforcement statement.

AHA calls for clear IRS guidance related to ACOs
The AHA has asked the Internal Revenue Service to issue clear guidance assuring that hospitals participating in an accountable care organization under the Medicare Shared Savings Program will not jeopardize their tax-exempt status, nor generate unrelated business income tax, if they comply with regulations promulgated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

HHS cuts FY 2011 funding for children’s hospitals GME
The Department of Health and Human Services has cut $48.5 million from the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Program for the remainder of fiscal year 2011. The cut would reduce FY 2011 funding for the program from about $316.8 million to $268.4 million.

CMS issues final rule on Medicaid payment for HACs
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a final rule prohibiting federal Medicaid payments to states for certain preventable health care-acquired conditions. Required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the rule is effective July 1, 2011, but gives states the option to delay implementation through July 1, 2012.

Survey finds starting salary greatest for specialists in multispecialty practices
A recent survey conducted by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) found that specialists in multispecialty practices earned more during their first year of employment than those employed in a single-specialty practice. The difference in starting salary was roughly $18,000.
